For much of the 20th century, millions of people inhaled lead daily without knowing it. One of the first things to suffer is the ability to sustain an idea over time. Thinking is not about reacting to stimuli or accumulating information, but maintaining an open question long enough for something to organize around it. When attention is interrupted repeatedly, that time disappears. We read fragments, understand parts, recognize topics, but it is hard to hold a thread. Thought becomes episodic. Intelligence or access to content is not lacking; mental continuity is. This is experienced as distraction, difficulty concentrating, the persistent feeling of never quite getting to the bottom of anything.
The same mechanism affects desire, but in a deeper and less obvious way. Human desire is not just wanting something, but being able to sustain a lack, a question, an orientation. Symptoms—insomnia, fatigue, attention difficulties—are addressed without altering the environment that produces them. The result is treating the consequence, not the cause.
At the same time, something central to adult life is weakened: the ability to initiate and sustain one's own actions. Not reactive actions, but those that require pushing through an initial moment without immediate reward: reading, writing, studying, deciding, organizing one's own life. Many people describe the same experience: they are constantly busy but find it extremely hard to start what they consider important. The environment supplies constant stimuli alleviating the discomfort of beginning something with no instant payoff. Over time, that discomfort stops being something to overcome and becomes something to avoid.
Here, something more serious than simple procrastination happens. Not only are small decisions—what to watch, read, or listen to—delegated, but the very experience of being the one who decides is weakened. Responsibility does not disappear as a moral demand, but as a daily experience. Responsibility is demanded from individuals who, little by little, lose the very conditions needed to exercise it. Not because they don't want to, but because the environment reduces the space in which a decision can mature.
This process has direct effects on the collective sphere. When attention is fragile and desire cannot be sustained, public life changes. Not because people "don't think," but because thinking together requires time, continuity, and tolerance for complexity. In a constantly interrupted environment, lengthy arguments lose appeal, nuance disappears, and intense emotions take center stage.
Here, political polarization is not an accident. It is functional to the medium. And it doesn't act mainly by appealing to positive feelings, but to something much more effective: hatred, outrage, and hostility. These feelings grab attention instantly, simplify reality into clear enemies, and minimize the need for argument. Hate requires no understanding or patience; it offers instant meaning. In an environment that hinders sustained reflection, such feelings spread more readily than any complex argument.
The result is not ignorance, but growing difficulty in constructing shared ideas. Things requiring time, nuance, or sustained development grow harder to maintain. Instead, simple narratives, loaded with negative emotion, tend to dominate. Conflict intensifies not because there is more disagreement, but because the ability to sustain a conversation without rupture diminishes.
All of this tends to be experienced as personality traits or simply as the sign of the times: lack of discipline, tiredness, trouble concentrating, apathy. It is seen as personal or just what is normal now. The same as happened for decades with lead. Environmental harm is not recognized as such: it is internalized, psychologized, medicalized, moralized. Meanwhile, the environment remains unchanged.
Here, the harm caused by lead teaches us something decisive: it was not corrected by asking people to breathe better or appealing to personal responsibility. It was corrected when it was accepted that the issue was environmental and the response had to be collective. While efforts targeted individuals, the harm continued.

In this context, desire is transformed. Instead of persisting as a question or orientation, it resolves into an uninterrupted act of consumption: one thing after another, but nothing is enough. Dissatisfaction is not experienced as lack, but as the need for more stimulus. There is not enough pause for anything to make sense. Time is filled, but experience is not processed.
Thinking requires tolerating not knowing, holding open questions, accepting complexity. When attention is permanently captured, doubt becomes uncomfortable and there is a rush to close it. Hence, rigid positions, closed identities, and simple stories easily thrive. Ideological and political polarization is not merely discursive: it matches an environment that rewards immediate certainty and penalizes reflection.
None of this is fixed by asking for more individual discipline. Calling for self-control in an environment designed for constant interruption is treating as individual problems what are in fact environmental effects.
To see the mobile phone as the new leaded gasoline is to recognize a familiar pattern: an omnipresent environment that optimizes a system's economic and social functioning while slowly and widely eroding basic human abilities. The final question is not whether each person can adapt better, but whether a society is willing to keep accepting as normal a decline that, as before, only becomes fully visible once it has already left its mark on entire generations.
